Frequently Asked Questions
When and where are the classes held?
Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday arrive at 18:15 for an 18:30 start.
Your first session is free.
We have our own Dojo based in Pembroke Dock. View our location on Google: https://g.co/kgs/JbR1cy9
Who runs Pembroke Karate?
Graham Thomas, 6th Dan, is the Shihan and the head instructor at the dojo. He began his Karate journey in 1974 and has been teaching Karate in Pembroke since then. He is supported by Carlo, 3rd Dan, and Simon, 1st Dan, who assist in teaching and guiding students.
Who attends – and am I fit enough?
Karate suits all levels of fitness. If you can walk, you can begin, your pace and fitness will build gradually over time.
We’re a family-focused club, with many parents training alongside their children. Lessons include beginners, juniors, and seniors. Senior grades are happy to support others with tips and guidance.
Can I join in and do karate with my child/children?
We recommend parents join in, it really helps children stay interested and enjoy the experience.
How often do I need to come?
Come as often as possible, like anything in life, the more often you train, the more quickly you will progress.
What do I need to bring?
If you are a beginner just wear loose clothing with long sleeves and jogging bottoms if you have them. If you have practiced karate before, you should wear your gi. Bring a drink.
What style of karate do you teach?
We teach Wado-Ryu karate: Wado-Ryu (和道流) means “Way of Harmony Style.”
It’s a traditional Japanese martial art that combines Karate striking techniques with fluid body movement and joint evasion rooted in Jujutsu.
How is Wado-Ryu different from other Karate styles?
Unlike hard styles that focus on force against force, Wado-Ryu emphasises:
Tai sabaki (body movement) to evade attacks
Nagashi (deflection) rather than blocking head-on
A blend of soft and hard techniques
Light, precise footwork over brute strength
What age can children start?
We suggest starting from 5 years old and up. Younger children settle better if a parent or guardian trains with them.
How much does it cost?
£5 per child
£6 per adult
The first session is free.
Are there extra lessons or sessions?
Yes. Once you’re attending regularly, we often run a Sunday session for students who want to build confidence or prepare for gradings.
If you come to both weekday classes, Sunday training is free of charge.
